On January 25, 2016, Frontwire Studios began an attempt to produce an unofficial Battlefront installment called Galaxy in Turmoil. The fan made game was in production using Unreal Engine 4 and was based on the canceled Star Wars: Battlefront III by Free Radical Design.[38][39] Although early versions of the game contained assets from Free Radical Design, they soon became "place holders" as the full game planned to be released using assets and music made from the ground up. On June 4, 2016, Galaxy in Turmoil gained a distribution deal through Valve and was planned to be released for free on Steam which generated a fair amount of attention.[40]

After the release of Pandemic's Star Wars Battlefront II in 2005 there were rumours of a third game coming from a variety of developers, including Free Radical (creators of TimeSplitters) and Slant Six (SOCOM). Considering that Battlefront II was the best-selling Star Wars game ever this shouldn't have been a surprise, except that every version of it got cancelled. Finally after the Disney acquisition of LucasFilm EA put Battlefield developer DICE on the project for 2015's Battlefront reboot, which gets a sequel out this November. But the cancelled third game had so many leaks, rumours and ideas that a group of modders have been working on the Star Wars Battlefront III Legacy project, a large-scale conversion mod for 2005's Star Wars Battlefront II that creates a playable version of the cancelled game using leaked assets from the game and brand new content.Star Wars: Battlefront II devs talk Single-Player Campaign, DLC Plans and The Last Jedi!Operation Raccoon City developer Slant Six had new Resident Evil title canned due to Star Wars Battlefront III leaksAll the details about the mod can be found here including where to download, as well as the trailer you can see below. Some of these were due to be in the cancelled game, such as General Grievous and the Dark Trooper from Dark Forces, whereas others are brand new such as Director Krennic from Rogue One and Starkiller from The Force Unleashed. It certainly should not be confused with Galaxy In Turmoil, the attempt to make a full game (not a mod) out of Battlefront III assets and ideas and was forced to remove all Star Wars references from their game, so it's now slightly generic sci-fi.
